Chapter Ten

Busted

Lisa wanted to punch the self-righteous smirk off Hailey’s pale face. She slammed her knuckles into the drink machine instead. Like she hadn’t been to the Suckieland Institute and Everlaugh International like a billion times before. She’d attended yearly Evergreen conferences at the Joseph Smith Memorial Building in downtown Salt Lake since she was five. Her parents bought fancy rooms at the Hilton, and then walked over to the conference where select leaders of the Church would give speeches on how much they cared about the gay people of the Church but in the same breath uttered how wicked they were.

She and Trent used to make fun of the gay men for being so flamboyant and the gay women for being so rough, the hairy men with their large Adam’s apples and their leftover lipstick and makeup. She used to think they were just faking it. Like they were just trying to get attention and they could snap out of it at anytime.

Lisa wanted to keep screaming at Hailey, but stopped since students were looking at her like she’d completely lost her mind.

Right now the universe seemed too small for the both of them. “Do me a favor, don’t talk to me anymore. And don’t try to change me.”

At last! The Coca-Cola can choose that minute to drop from the machine. She grabbed it and then turned on her heels, not wanting to see the expression on her former friend’s face.

Hailey didn’t care about her. No one did. How could they when she was so gross and filthy.

Lisa ran to the bathroom as fast as she could. No way was anyone in school going to see her first screaming and now crying. She’d really drop down the popularity scale that way. Not that it seemed to matter anymore. Nothing seemed to matter at all if the one person she cared about the most didn’t want to be near her.

She’d been dying to tell Hailey about her dream date with Megan. But just because of the fact it was with a girl, she couldn’t. It didn’t seem fair. Why did the Church members talk about homosexuals shoving their sex lives in other people’s faces? All she wanted to do was talk about the perfect kiss, but she couldn’t do that, even with her best friend because she treated her like a virus that could destroy her. It wasn’t fair.

To enjoy kissing the godawful Trent, Hailey had to be as straight as they came. She’d never get what it was like to be different, to feel like there was something inside that was evil, but could never be destroyed. No matter how hard one tried.

Lisa crumpled her Coke can, letting the carbonated remains explode into the trash bin. She forced herself to look at her image in the mirror, and she stepped back in fear. Streaks of mascara had run down her face, making her look like a zombie. Her normally pretty eyes were bloodshot and the gorgeous curls she’d worked hard on this morning had turned flat from resting them on the filthy wall.
